TGt Meets...Chris Wilkinson of Expert HR Solutions

The latest business owner to feature in our TGt Meets written interview series is Chris Wilkinson, from Expert HR Solutions. Read on to hear what he has to say about his specialist services, the future of HR and more.

1. Tell us about Expert HR Solutions and the services you offer.

Expert HR Solutions offers tailored solutions dealing with all aspects of employing people to businesses of all sizes. This can be done on a fixed price rolling monthly retainer with no long tie in period. Or as aa one off project.  Where possible projects are also offered on a fixed price basis, but complex TUPE transfers or Redundancy projects are on a pay as you go basis. Our retainers can either include or exclude an HR IT package which helps manage absences.

2. How did you first begin working in HR?

In the Royal Navy all HR responsibility except recruitment and selection and payroll is devolved to the line, so my initial training was all about managing people. I was lucky enough to be selected as a staff officer at the officers’ training college and loved it. So when I came to leave I was determined to gain my CIPD qualification and work in HR.

3. How do you at Expert HR Solutions adapt your strategies to align with changing regulatory framework?

It is a constant battle. Politicians regularly introduce new laws or amend old ones. Law in the UK is also amended by judges in courts. In employment law terms there are about 155,000 Employment Tribunals each year each of which has the potential to be a case precedent. We subscribe to an electronic database of all court rulings and our professional institute brings to our attention key rulings and legal changes.

4. What is a future challenge you foresee in the HR landscape in Dorset?

The impending enforcement of predictable working hours and days is going to have an enormous impact on the hospitality, tourism, and care sectors.

5. What separates Expert HR Solutions from your Dorset competitors?

Firstly we do not have competitors, we have potential collaborators, and we are very happy to work in partnership with several similar companies. We have won the SME News Best outsourced HR Service Provider in England and Wales in both 2022 and 2023. We ask our clients every year via an independent company how they rate our services using a system called Net Promoter Score. We have never scored less than 75% which is considered world class, and the response rate is usually between 35 and 50%. Finally we constantly seek advice from clients on what we could improve and if they suggest something we act on it.

6. Finally, what is your favourite part of your day-to-day role in Expert HR Solutions?

The variety and finding solutions that work for clients.
