REVIEW: The Coconut Tree

We have a plethora of great restaurants in Bournemouth and Dorset, and we have visited many, but being a family with young children there aren't many truly family-friendly restaurants we would consider as strong options.

When it comes to family-friendly dining, it's normally a compromise between child-friendly activities and amenities vs food quality. Over the last few years, if we've fancied an evening out with the kids we normally sacrifice good food in exchange for them being happy and actually allowing us to eat our food rather than inhaling it after they've decided they're bored!

I'm very pleased to tell you that we have finally found a restaurant that caters for adults and kids and you are guaranteed sublime food and drinks along with happy children in a relaxed atmosphere - The Coconut Tree Sri Lankan Restaurant in Bournemouth.

Introduction to The Coconut Tree Sri Lankan Restaurant

Located on Christchurch Road, The Coconut Tree is a Sri Lankan restaurant that offers a fun-filled and eclectic dining experience for all ages. The restaurant is owned by a group of friends who wanted to share their love for Sri Lankan cuisine with the world. The menu features a range of small plates, mains, and sides that are perfect for sharing with friends and family. The Cocktail menu is not to be missed too!

What Makes The Coconut Tree a Great Family Dining Option?

The Coconut Tree is an ideal choice for families looking for a lively and fun dining experience. The restaurant has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, making it suitable for all ages. The staff are friendly and accommodating; AJ our host was very helpful and immediately brought the kids over some crayons and activity sheets and quickly took their order. We love that the children's menu isn't just your standard beige food options! They have thoughtfully introduced some traditional Sri Lankan dishes and flavours into children's favourites and even the children's drinks were basically mocktails (Tropical Punch and Zingy Lemonade - they even had a little umbrella!) This would be great for getting them interested and engaged with the experience.

The kids had a Cheesy Hopper Pancake which our 5-year-old absolutely devoured. Our 2yr old had Cheesy bites which she loved and both came with generous side plates of cucumber, carrots and a Sri Lankan dip.

And they both dug in-to to our selection too, with the small plates being perfect for trying a variety of dishes. AJ helped to explain the menu and made some fine recommendations. we got a little carried away. Our choices were; kale and cabbage sambol (sounds simple but with the coconut oil and curry leaf sauté, was just delicious), devilled chicken wings, black pork (an absolute must-try!), prawn curry, hot butter calamari and parotta roti and rice - all an absolutely delicious explosion of flavours and textures.

Although we're not vegan or vegetarian, I noticed that the vegetarian and vegan options are much larger than usual, making it a great choice for families with dietary restrictions.

The Ambiance and Decor of The Coconut Tree

The Coconut Tree has a vibrant and colourful interior that reflects the lively nature of Sri Lankan culture. The walls are decorated with funky artwork, and the furniture is a mix of wooden tables and chairs that create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We visited on Saturday at 6pm and it was already busy with a mix of ages and celebrations - it was such a fun and busy atmosphere but not intimidating for the children.
