Szimonetta’s has been a professional pumpkin carver for more than 10 years and she has shared 4 pumpkin carving tips with us;
1. When you choose a pumpkin, make sure it's not rotten around the stem or starting to mould. It’s important that your pumpkin is dry otherwise pumpkin will quickly become mouldy and soggy, especially if it is in the house, at room temperature.
2. If you want to keep your carved pumpkin on display for a little longer then it's better to keep it outside. It will make a nice decoration on your porch or at your front door. Your carved pumpkin placed in a warm room or even at room temperature will start to rot quickly.
3. If you do stencil carving (when you are not cutting through the pumpkin wall, you only carve out the surface) then you can apply Vaseline, and petroleum jelly on the surface and that will keep it moisturised. The pumpkin, won't dry out as quickly and it gives a nice shine to your masterpiece as well.
4. Want to keep your pumpkin as fresh as you can to keep it longer? Spray the surface with lemon water at the end of each day and wrap the carving in cling film. Pop it in a cold place like your fridge or even outside.
