Review: Shaka Surf Surfing Lessons

Shaka Surf are one of the top surfing schools in Dorset, they provide brilliant fun for all ages and experience. We recently sent some of our mini TGt reviewers down to try out a surf lesson.

With Dorset being home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, watersports are a popular sport of choice. With Shaka Surf the only surf school on the south coast to be accredited with “Surfing England” they are a firm favourite when it comes to equipment hire and lessons in Dorset. 

Last week we sent some of mini TGt reviewers down to Branksome Dene beach to take part in their first ever surfing lesson and they had an absolute blast! Wetsuit hire is included within the lesson so once they were kitted out in the right size suit it was time to get warmed up.

Their first task was to run and dive straight into the sea. Whilst this might just sound like a fun way to start the lesson it's actually for the instructors to gauge how confident everyone is in the water. It was clear to see that student safety was of upmost importance to them from the start, and with one of our youngest surfers being a little more nervous the team kept a close eye on her throughout giving her reasurance and making sure she was safe. 

Once warmed up, safety rules were explained and they went over some basics before it was time to hit the waves. They started off just getting used to the board, catching little waves and gliding into shore. Before long they were up on their feet surfing like the pros. It was incredible to see the progress over the two hour session. They were absolutey buzzing and can't wait for their next session! 

From the start the team were really engaging and enthusiactic, they were in the water with them the whole time adjusting technique and ensuring a really great experience for both old and new surfers. All Shaka Surf instructors are ISA fully qualified with SLSGB lifeguards qualifications taken yearly so you really are in great hands. 

Group lessons are open to those aged 8 upwards, the session includes equipment and wetsuit hire for £45 pp (Adults) / £38pp (U15s). 
They also have a hire plus option which gives you a 15 minute tutorial to cover the basics followed by an hours hire for £35pp.
