REVIEW: The Polar Express Swanage

After having to travel from Poole to Seaton to attend our nearest Polar Express experience last year, I was delighted to learn that The Polar Express was coming to Swanage!

My daughters are 6 and 3, so my youngest was a little but too young to really understand the full magical of it all last year, but this year they are the perfect ages and seeing their little faces filled with excitement and wonder will stay with my husband and I forever.

For 2024 ticket and booking information please visit The Polar Express event page here.

And I must admit, that when we arrived on the platform to all The Polar Express characters performing scenes from the story, I was overcome by the joy of it all and shed a little tear myself! What better way to get in to the Christmas spirit than with this enchanting story and steam train in the picturesque town of Swanage.

The History of The Polar Express Swanage Steam Train holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. The origins of Swanage Steam Train can be traced back to the early 20th century when steam-powered locomotives were a vital mode of transportation. Originally used for transporting goods and passengers, the Swanage steam train became a symbol of resilience and ingenuity for the community.

This year, inspired by the popular children's book and subsequent movie adaptation, "The Polar Express," the station and one of their vintage steam trains have been transformed into a magical experience for children and adults alike what better way to experience the festive spirit than aboard The Polar Express Swanage?

What to Expect on The Polar Express Swanage

You are given a carriage name when you book, so when The Polar Express is ready to board, you head to your carriage (ours was Blitzen) and then you’re greeted by characters from The Polar Express. The attention to detail is remarkable, creating an immersive experience that transports you in the story of The Polar Express.

Once you’re settled in to your seats and the experience, everyone is given a hot choclate and cookie to the hit from the film ‘Hot Chocolate’ – this was the kids’ favourite part. I won’t give too much away but expect most of the characters from the story to make an appearance and take you through the story and songs of The Polar Express along with Christmas carols. And there’s an extra special visitor and his Elves come onboard to talk to the children and give everyone a little gift!

The journey on The Polar Express Swanage takes you through the stunning Dorset countryside, with its rolling hills and picturesque landscapes so if you are keen to see the views, I would recommend an afternoon booking although we did get to see Corfe Castle all lit-up which was beautiful.
