Dorset Healthcare Leader Takes on Ironman Challenge for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care

Tim Goodson, Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees at Lewis-Manning Hospice Care, is set to take on the gruelling Ironman Les Sables D'Olonne-Vendée in France in June 2025 to raise vital funds for the hospice.

The Ironman challenge is one of the most demanding endurance races in the world, consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle, and a 26.2-mile marathon run. This iconic event takes place in one of France’s most vibrant triathlon destinations, with a stunning course featuring a canal swim, a bike ride through picturesque forests, and a marathon along the famous Les Remblai promenade. Tim, a highly respected Executive Officer at Dorset General Practice Alliance is currently following an intense 30-week training programme to prepare for the race.

Tim shared his motivation for taking on the challenge:

"My training is going well; I’m putting in the hours and gradually building up. It has long been an ambition of mine to complete a full Ironman, having previously completed a half Ironman in Swansea in 2024. It’s going to be tough, but I’m up for it. I’m training with my friend and colleague Mark Orchard, who’s CFO at Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Hospitals, and we’re motivating each other along the way.

“We have fully funded everything connected with the event ourselves, so 100% of donations will go to Lewis-Manning Hospice Care. This is a charity helping people with life-limiting illnesses and their families across East Dorset, Poole, Purbeck, Bournemouth and West Hampshire. It’s a cause very close to my heart, and I’d love as many people as possible to get behind me and support this fantastic charity."

Interest in Ironman races has always been significant, especially following the remarkable achievement of former racing driver Billy Monger, who broke the Ironman record for a double amputee at the World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in October 2024. Monger completed the 226.3km (140.6 miles) course in 14 hours 23 minutes 56 seconds, more than two hours inside the previous record. His incredible feat was featured on Comic Relief in March, bringing widespread recognition to the sport and inspiring countless athletes.

Supporters can help Tim reach his fundraising goal by donating via his dedicated fundraising page www.justgiving.com/page/tim-goodson-2 or by sharing his challenge with friends, family, and colleagues. Every donation makes a difference in providing essential hospice care for those in need.
