New flood defence proposals for Poole

A proposal to submit a bid for funding for a new £12 million flood defence scheme from Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill, will be considered by BCP Council’s Cabinet on 30 September.

A financially viable tidal defence scheme along approximately 1.5km of waterfront at Back Water Channel has been developed. Subject to central government funding, it would protect parts of Poole Town Centre, the Old Town and new developments in the Twin Sails regeneration area from tidal flooding for the next 100 years.

A permanent flood defence scheme is listed on the Environment Agency’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management medium term plan. Currently the remaining undefended water frontage would rely on emergency temporary flood defences. Working in conjunction with landowners, developers, the Environment Agency, Poole Harbour Commissioners and other relevant organisations, these proposals will complete the provision of permanent flood defences in this area.

Councillor Felicity Rice, Portfolio Holder for Environment & Climate Change commented,

“With predicted sea-level rise due to global warming, it’s essential we act now as most of the sea defences in that area are very low in level and require urgent attention. The flood defences were originally included in the Local Plan as part of the ongoing regeneration of the Twin Sails area, but if the bid for funding is approved, this proposed scheme aims to provide a consistent standard of tidal flood protection for the whole frontage and protect existing residential and commercial properties, as well as future developments.”

The council is bidding for a £12m Flood Defence Grant in Aid for all primary works to construct the proposed tidal flood defences. If approved, the proposal will then be assessed by the Environment Agency’s Large Projects Review Group in October 2020.

This bid supports the council’s priorities for a sustainable environment; to protect, preserve and enhance our outstanding natural environment for generations to come and keeps its commitment to vibrant communities with outstanding quality of life where everyone plays an active role.
