Explore the outdoors
The landscape around Bridport and West Bay is nothing short of stunning. Whether you prefer hiking, cycling, or just a gentle stroll, you’ll find miles of trails winding through rolling countryside, rugged cliffs, and picturesque coastal paths.
If you want to get a real feel for the Jurassic Coast, head up to Colmer’s Hill, just outside Bridport. It’s an iconic local landmark, and the short but steep climb to the top rewards you with panoramic views over the Dorset countryside. For something more relaxed, take a walk along West Bay beach, where golden cliffs rise dramatically above the sand - it’s the perfect spot for a morning coffee by the sea.
Step back in time
Bridport has a rich history, and you don’t have to look far to find it. Start at Bridport Museum, where you’ll discover everything from the town’s Roman roots to its long-standing rope-making industry (which once supplied the navy with ship rigging). It’s a fascinating glimpse into the past and a great way to appreciate how Bridport became the town it is today.
If grand country houses are more your thing, Mapperton House & Gardens is just a short drive away. This stunning Jacobean manor is often called one of the finest stately homes in England, with beautifully kept gardens and a history that stretches back centuries.
Taste the best of Dorset
Food lovers, you’re in for a treat. Bridport and West Bay are home to some of the best local producers of beer, cider, and wine - and plenty of opportunities to try them.
Start with Palmers Brewery, the oldest thatched brewery in the UK, which has been making beer in Bridport since 1794. Their brewery tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how their ales are brewed, and of course, there are plenty of chances to taste them.
For wine lovers, Furleigh Wine Estate is a must. Nestled in the rolling hills just outside Bridport, this vineyard produces award-winning English sparkling wines that have put Dorset on the map. Join a tour and tasting session, and you’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for English wine (and probably a bottle or two).
If cider is more your thing, Dorset Nectar Cider is worth a visit. This organic orchard produces 13 different varieties of cider, and their tours give you the full lowdown on how their delicious drinks are made. Plus, you can taste them all in their rustic taproom - what’s not to love?
Get active
If you prefer your holidays to come with a side of adrenaline, there are plenty of ways to get moving. Bridport Leisure Centre has everything from a swimming pool to squash courts if you fancy a workout.
For something more adventurous, head down to West Bay Canoes and take a relaxing paddle along the River Brit - a peaceful way to see the area from the water. Or, if you’re after something a bit faster, Lyme Bay RIB Charter offers thrilling high-speed boat rides along the Jurassic Coast. Expect sea spray, incredible views, and plenty of excitement!
For Broadchurch fans
If you were hooked on the TV drama Broadchurch, you’re in the right place. West Bay was the main filming location, and you can follow the Broadchurch Trail to visit key spots from the show. The towering cliffs, the harbour, and even the police station - it’s all here, and it’s a great way to explore West Bay while reliving some of the series’ most dramatic moments.
Now, all that’s left to do is decide what to do first!
