REVIEW: A weekend away in the all-electric, powerful Volkswagen ID.5
During the summer holidays, we tested out the all-electric, super-powerful Volkswagen ID.5 from Breeze Motor Group to see how it compared with our current hybrid. We tested it to the max by taking it up and down Dorset's steepest hills and even through a ford! Here's what we thought about the car and it's performance...
Getting over my fear of electric cars
I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in electric cars. In fact, prior to this review, I was a die-hard Hybrid driver and currently drive a Volvo XC-60. I wrongly assumed that you wouldn't get very far without having to stop to charge or, worst case scenario, running out of juice half way down the motorway with the kids in the back of the car.
Oh how I have been proved wrong!
Coincidently, just before I was invited to review the Volkswagen ID.5, my accountant had advised me to consider moving from Hybrid to all-electric because of the tax benefits so I was really keen to test out an all-electric.
We decided to take the car for the weekend so we could drive it to my in-laws in Sidmouth and back to give it a good run on a regular route we take. It was also Folk Festival so a good opportunity to take it across the sea-front and test it up some of the Jurassic Coasts steepest hills!
In this review, we will delve into the key features and design of the Volkswagen ID.5, explore its performance capabilities and the benefits of switching your fuel or hybrid motor for all-electric.
Key features and design of the Volkswagen ID.5
The Volkswagen ID.5 is a testament to Volkswagen's commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle design. With its sleek and aerodynamic silhouette, the ID.5 effortlessly merges style with functionality. The bold front grille and dynamic LED headlights enhance the vehicle's aesthetics (would definitely be great as a branded Total Guide to fleet car!)
The ID.5 felt surprisingly spacious, and it isn't that much smaller than my SUV and has large boot space. The interior is designed with both driver and passenger comfort in mind. High-quality materials, ergonomic seating, and intuitive controls create an inviting atmosphere that makes every journey enjoyable. The innovative ID. Light, an interactive light strip integrated into the dashboard, provides intuitive visual cues to assist the driver and enhance the overall driving experience. Whether you're embarking on a daily commute or a weekend getaway, the ID.5 offers ample cargo space to accommodate all your needs. With its versatile design and attention to detail, the ID.5 sets a new standard for electric vehicle aesthetics.
Performance and driving experience of the Volkswagen ID.5
I always feel nervous when test driving a vehicle, but the ID.5 is extremely similar to the Hybrids I've driven so it took no time at all to get used to the handling and the functionality. It has a lot more power than I expected; the ID.5 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in a matter of seconds, making every drive exhilarating.
It's powered by cutting-edge electric technology which gives a sleek and silent ride - but I'm not a fan of how quiet these cars are. It was really noticeable when we were driving through Sidmouth Town Centre during the folk festival; there were so many pedestrians on the road, and I had to beep to make them aware I was there. I'm just not sure that the quietness is safe, and I wonder whether manufacturers will actually start putting a sound in!?
The ID.5's advanced regenerative braking system not only enhances energy efficiency but also provides a more engaging driving experience. The precise and responsive steering, combined with the ID.5's low centre of gravity, ensures exceptional handling and agility on the road. Additionally, the ID.5 is equipped with state-of-the-art safety features, including advanced driver-assistance systems (it automatically slows you down when you enter a 30 mph zone, which during the first time worried me as I thought we were breaking down but after I understood what it was doing found it really helpful).
Comparison with other electric vehicles in the market
While I have no previous experience of driving an electric car, I do know that the range of this one is hard to beat. We got to Sidmouth and back + a days work around the BCP area still with 40% left of charge! With a single charge (which is super-fast!), the ID.5 can cover vast distances, eliminating range anxiety and making it a reliable choice for both daily commutes and long trips.
The future of electric vehicles and Volkswagen's role
The ID.5 is a testament to Volkswagen's dedication to creating electric vehicles that are not only environmentally friendly, but also deliver exceptional performance and style. As the world moves towards a greener future, Volkswagen is leading the way, providing electric vehicles that meet the demands of today's drivers while reducing our carbon footprint. The Volkswagen ID.5 is a shining example of Volkswagen's commitment to driving us into the future.

In conclusion, the Volkswagen ID.5 is a testament to Volkswagen's commitment to innovation, performance, and sustainability.
