Pending Poole star Cairns has strong bond with legend Hancock
Pending Pirates star Will Cairns described the strong bond between himself and former world champion Greg Hancock.
Cairns is set to arrive at Wimborne Road when he turns 16 at the end of June, as well as starting his career across the continent.
He has been mentored by four-time world champion Hancock, who featured in Poole's 2013 Elite League championship success. He was signed by owner Matt Ford to cover the absence of Chris Holder.
Speaking about working with Hancock on British Speedway’s Official Podcast, Cairns said: “Me and Greg definitely have quite a strong bond.
"My dad loves Greg and Greg loves us all. His family are brilliant.
“We train hard at the gate and it’s paying off.”
Cairns has agreed an 18-month contract at Poole, meaning he will also be on board for the 2026 campaign.
He doesn't turn 16, the minimum age for a Championship rider, until June 29th and will step into the team on a 2.00 average when he is old enough to compete.
He added: “I’m going to be going from one league in one country to four leagues in three countries in a night.
“It is crazy but we’re ready. We’ve got bikes out in Sweden already. It’s sorting out vans and starting to book our flights.”
