Cook says doing the treble would be 'awesome' for Poole Pirates

Ben Cook admitted it would be “awesome” to seal a hat-trick of trophies as Poole Pirates captain this season, but realises there is still a long way to go.

The Pirates skipper was speaking after his side roared into a 52-38 SGB Championship play-off semi-final first-leg advantage over Workington at Wimborne Road.

Richard Lawson (15) and Cook (13+2) were both unbeaten by a visiting rider on the night, while Tom Brennan (10) was only scuppered once by the Comets.

Pirates will head to the GT Tyres Arena on Saturday looking to defend their 14-point advantage. They are also in the finals of the BSN Series and Knockout Cup competitions.

Asked what it would be like to captain the side to a trio of trophies, Cowra-born Cook said: “It would be awesome, that’s the goal at the start of the year but there’s a lot to go yet before we do that.

“But we’re on the right track. Everyone’s doing their part but it’s a different ball game on those nights. We’ve just got to perform.”

Only Lewis Kerr, guesting for the Comets, was able to deny Brennan a maximum as Poole’s heat leaders turned on the style.

Asked about the importance of not dropping a point to an opponent, Cook said: "For sure it is especially at this time of the year when the meetings are so important.

“Me and Richard did that and Tom only dropped one so yeah, all the boys went and dug in and did their bit and it’s what we need this time of year. We need a good lead going there and hopefully it’s enough."
