Ford: Every team in the Championship has been after Cairns

Promoter Danny Ford praised the professionalism of rising star Will Cairns as the wonder kid gets set to begin his spell with Poole Pirates.

The teenager has agreed an 18-month contract at Wimborne Road, meaning he will also be on board for the 2026 campaign.

He does not turn 16, the minimum age for a Championship rider, until June 29th and will step into the team on a 2.00 average when he is old enough to compete.

Speaking about the youngster, Ford told the Speedway Star: “He’s only a 15-year-old kid but you wouldn’t believe how professional he is when you speak to him.

“He has obviously been brought up in a very professional environment. He has been tutored by Greg Hancock, and I know his father Paul has put in a lot of time and effort to make sure he is around the best riders possible and the best mentors.

“You are speaking to a 15-year-old and sometimes you have to remember that. The way he speaks and comes across is far beyond his years.”

Cairns is also set to ride across the continent once he turns 16, as well as competing in the National Development League.

And Ford insisted the demand for Cairns was high across the country.  

“Probably every single team in the Championship has been after this kid,” said Ford.

“Ultimately, it didn’t come down to finances. That’s completely out of the question. He was probably offered a lot more money at other clubs.

“Will and his family thought Poole was the place where he would develop the most. We have a relatively good reputation with bringing on youngsters and seeing them improve. We fully believe Poole is the place where Will is going to thrive, develop and take that next step in his career.”
