Hagon stars at reserve as Pirates hammer Workington

Exciting youngster Sam Hagon was a star of the show, as Poole Pirates hammered Workington Comets in the SGB Championship at Wimborne Road.

The talented 19-year-old, operating at reserve for Poole, totalled 12+1 from five rides as Pirates recorded a 61-29 success.

Tom Brennan (13+1) and Richard Lawson (11+1) also delivered a fine night’s work as Neil Middleditch’s side romped to victory.

Only Workington’s Troy Batchelor (13) scored more than six for the Comets, who ensured a difficult night on the road after winning at Plymouth a night previously.

Hagon, who bounced back from only scoring 2+1 at home against Edinburgh last time out on home shale, put his improvement down to better gating.

The 19-year-old said: "I think my starting was pretty good the whole night. It was pretty awful the other week but was better tonight.

“The track was definitely better too. It held the moisture the whole night, in the last meeting it dried pretty quick.

“To be fair the track was similar to last time but I didn't really adapt to it then. I didn't change much either. I sort of made gates and that made it a lot easier.”

Meanwhile, Poole also learned their Knockout Cup semi-final opponents will be the winner of the quarter-final tie between Scunthorpe (36) and Berwick (54), the second leg of which is scheduled for Friday.
