Poole Pirates inching closer to treble after dominating cup final first leg
Poole Pirates are within touching distance of claiming an historic trophy treble, after they put themselves in the driving seat in the final of the Knockout Cup.
Neil Middleditch’s side powered to a 57-33 victory over the Oxford Cheetahs on Thursday, meaning they take a 24-point lead into the second leg on home shale at Wimborne Road on Wednesday.
Dazzling Dane Tobias Thomsen proved a trump card at reserve for the visitors, totalling 11+1 from his five rides.
Richard Lawson (14, pictured) and Tom Brennan (11+2) also impressed as heat leaders while Oxford were rocked by the withdrawal of veteran Scott Nicholls after he tangled with Brennan in heat four.

Middleditch told the club website: “For sure it was a good win for us but I can't stop thinking about Scotty who is good friend of mine.
“Seeing him suffer that injury wasn't a great sight to be honest and I just want to wish him a speedy recovery.
“But, we had a job to do and the boys went out there and put on a great show. We had two great performances from our two reserves and I can't tell you how pleased Toby (Tobias Thomsen) was to beat Sam Masters when they met.
“It certainly is ours to lose now and, whilst I don't think the same level of tension will be there on Wednesday when we complete the season, I am sure Oxford will still be looking to make us work for it."
