Discover Lyme Regis’ Hidden Gem: The Town Mill – A Living Piece of History

Just a short stroll from Lyme Regis’ beautiful seafront lies The Town Mill, a unique artisanal hub bursting with creativity, charm, and over a thousand years of history.

Whether you’re a local exploring your doorstep or a visitor discovering the magic of the Jurassic Coast, The Town Mill is a must-see destination where heritage and craftsmanship come together in the heart of Lyme Regis.

The Town Mill’s story stretches back to at least 1340, when King Edward III granted a licence to operate a mill on the site. However, it’s believed to have even earlier origins, potentially making it one of around 5,000 pre-Domesday mills in England. Over the centuries, the mill played a vital role in local life – milling wheat for bread and malt for beer – making it a cornerstone of Lyme Regis’ thriving community.

By the late 1800s, however, The Town Mill faced challenges from cheap imported grain and more efficient milling technology, eventually falling silent in 1926. The buildings were later used as a council depot, but without care and attention, the site gradually slipped into dereliction.

Saved by the Community

In the early 1990s, plans were drawn up to demolish the site entirely, but the people of Lyme Regis had other ideas. Determined not to lose this vital piece of local history, a passionate group of volunteers formed The Town Mill Trust. Over £500,000 was raised to restore the buildings, machinery, and waterwheel, all with the aim of bringing the mill back to life.

Their efforts were rewarded when, on 26th May 2001, the novelist John Fowles officially opened the restored Town Mill to the public. For the first time in 75 years, flour was milled once again which was a proud moment that continues to this day thanks to a team of dedicated volunteer millers.

Today, The Town Mill is more than just a working museum, it’s a vibrant creative hub where history meets modern-day craftsmanship. Visitors can watch the milling process in action and even purchase flour, freshly milled on-site using traditional stoneground methods.

Beyond the mill itself, you’ll find independent businesses and creative spaces: The Town Mill Shop, The Miller’s Garden – A peaceful outdoor space inspired by the herbs and plants a miller’s family might have grown, The Strawberry Tree – A restaurant, café, cooking school, and event venue. Molesworth & Bird – Specialists in unique seaweed art, Lyme Regis Brewery – Crafting delicious beers in the heart of the mill, Town Mill Pottery – Showcasing beautiful handmade ceramics, Sew La Di Da Vintage and Jewellery by Lucy Campbell

The Town Mill even caught the attention of The Guardian last year, further cementing its reputation as a must-visit destination in Lyme Regis.

Entry to The Town Mill is completely free, so whether you’re interested in history, craftsmanship, or simply soaking up the unique atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to explore here in Dorset.
